New Student Orientation

New Student Orientation is designed to help first-year and transfer students make a successful transition into the Luther community. During orientation, you will

  • learn more about Luther and the college’s academic and community expectations
  • interact in meaningful ways with other new students, faculty, and staff
  • acquire some of the tools necessary to be successful in college
  • and begin to map your future

Key Events

  • A Luther Welcome. President Paula Carlson, campus staff, College Ministries, and student orientation leaders will officially welcome you to the Luther community.
  • Class Photo! Wear your Luther T-shirt.
  • Floor meetings and dinner. Get to know your neighbors!
  • Lights, Camera, Action: A Backstage Pass to Life at Luther. Are these professional actors or RAs? You won’t want to miss these hilarious skits and movies.
  • Celebrate Community! Music, dancing, food, and friends in the CFL parking lot.
  • Sunday Morning Worship. Join the Luther Student Congregation for our Sunday morning worship.
  • Norse Course. Join your floormates for some fun as you walk the Luther campus to find interesting facts at various locations.
  • Welcome Dinner and Social Hour. This annual event welcomes you to the Luther community and introduces you to President Paula Carlson and other campus leaders.
  • First Paideia session. This Paideia session will be your first academic class at Luther. Come prepared to get to know your classmates, explore the expectations of a Luther education, and discuss your assigned summer reading.
  • The Luther Way. You will rotate through this series of three programs to learn more about the Luther community and what it means to be a part of this special place.
  • Forging Connections. You will rotate through this series of three programs to better understand Luther programs and their connection to yourself and beyond.
  • Desserts in Decorah. An all-time favorite! Students are invited into the homes of members of the Decorah community for a fun meet-and-greet gathering.
  • Opening Convocation. The community gathers to mark the beginning of the new year with a faculty procession and official welcoming of new students into the community.
